Ohorokova (the Herero Dress)

The Herero traditional dress—
a narrative woven with complexity and beauty.

This body of work was captured on August 26th, 2023, on Herero Day. Herero Day, also known as Red Flag Day or Red Flag Heroes' Day (Otjiherero: Otjiserandu), is an annual gathering of the Herero people in Namibia to honor their ancestors and chieftains who have passed away. This significant event symbolizes themes of resistance, unity, and loyalty, while also commemorating the Herero people's steadfast defiance against colonization, particularly under German rule.

This work, the photographs and upcoming paintings, is my personal and artistic take on the history of the Herero people and the meaning of the dress.
